Learning Targets
In the Figures and Faces 1 course,we’re going to take an in-depth look at people. We’ll learn the proportions of the human figure and the human face. We will also look at how those proportions change with age and gender. Working from photos and from real life observation, students in this course will learn how to draw people the way that they really look, instead of how we think they should look. From spotting details in skin texture to understanding how gravity makes clothes hang on the body, learning to see is the first step in learning to draw.
Come learn how light interacts with the world around us to make highlights and shadows, how the human eye perceives that light, how to measure proportions and angles (uh-oh, there goes Mr. New using math words again!), and how to change facial features to emphasize emotions or character traits. In the process, students will boost their vocabulary with words like: portrait, value, scale, proportion, construction, geometric shapes, organic shapes, and so much more!
If any of this sounds too complicated, trust that Mr. New will be with you every step of the way. And trust that drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. By the time you complete this class, you’ll be proficient in drawing black-and-white portraits, and you’ll be fully prepared for the following courses:
- Ultimate Color Theory (acrlic paints)
- Wide Open Spaces 1 (chalk pastels – grayscale and color)
- Figures and Faces 2 (chalk pastels – color)
- Wide Open Spaces 2 (acrylic paints – color)
