Description
Clay Hand Building Learning Targets
The purpose of the Clay Hand Building Class is to learn the basics of building clay vessels and sculptures without the use of a wheel. Each session will focus on different techniques and styles. Register today to have fun making a mess! These classes are OPEN TO ALL AGES. You’re never too young or old to start learning about art.
Registration
The $80 registration fee includes all supplies and all four days of class: June 13-16, 2022. There are three course offerings to fit your schedule. Each of these course offerings will teach the same lessons throughout the week:
- 10am to 11am
- Noon to 1pm
- 2pm to 3pm
Session Offerings
Clay Hand Building Class will use low-fire earth clay. This means that all pieces must be fired in the kiln before they can be sent home.
Monday, June 13th – Slab/Coil Cups and Bowls
Learn how to roll and manipulate clay coils and slabs to build simple vessels. Primary focus will be cups and bowls. Learn scoring and slipping techniques for properly connecting wet-to-wet clay.
Tuesday, June 14th – Decorative Vessels
Learn how to make more complex, decorative vessels. In addition to decorations, we’ll also start adding handles, lids, and other functional parts.
Wednesday, June 15th – Gargoyles and Other Sculptures
Sculpt animals, monsters, and other artistic pieces.
Thursday, June 16th – Glazing Your Sculptures or Building More!
Use this time to either glaze the vessels and sculptures you made previously, or use this time to free-build whatever you want out of clay.
Saturday, July 2nd, 10am to Noon – Pickup Your Creations
Since all of the clay works must be fired in the kiln, pickup day is a few weeks after the classes end. If this date/time does not work for you to pick up your pieces, contact the instructor to schedule alternate pickup times.
