Learning Targets
In the Beginner Drawing Studio course, we’re going to take a look at the types of lines and shapes that we see in the world around us. From organic shapes to geometric forms, we’ll learn to focus our eyes, and use simple tools (pencils and charcoal) to render realistic imagery. We’re going to train our eyes to see how things really look, instead of the way that we think they look. From spotting textural minutiae to noticing the way objects look cloudier in the distance, learning to see is the first step in learning to draw.
We’ll learn how light interacts with the world around us to make highlights and shadows, how the human eye perceives that light, how to measure proportions and angles (uh-oh, there goes Mr. New using math words again!), and how to change the scale of objects to emphasize distance or emotion… In the process, students will boost their vocabulary with words like: value, scale, proportion, geometric shapes, organic shapes, foreground, background, and so much more!
If any of this sounds too complicated, trust that Mr. New will be with you every step of the way. And trust that drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. By the time you complete this class, you’ll be proficient in drawing black-and-white images, and you’ll be fully prepared for the following courses:
- Figures and Faces 1 (graphite and charcoal)
- Ultimate Color Theory (acrlic paints)
- Wide Open Spaces 1 (chalk pastels – grayscale and color)
- Figures and Faces 2 (chalk pastels – color)
- Wide Open Spaces 2 (acrylic paints – color)
