Newquii Studios will provide all of the necessary supplies, to include chalk pastels and drawing pads. Students will get to keep these supplies when the course is complete. As references, students in this portrait class will use mirrors, photographs, themselves, and each other.

If you wish, you may also choose to bring your own supplies in addition to those provided.

Learning Targets

In the Figures and Faces 2 course,we’re going to take an in-depth look at people. We’ll expand upon the proportional knowledge that we learned in Figures and Faces 1, and learn when and how to change those proportions to meet our artistic goals. We will also work with more active poses and learn to choose colors expressively. Students in this class will first learn all the rules of drawing portraits, then systematically learn why so many artists break the rules on purpose.

Come learn how human faces and bodies show emotion, how to effectively lay out a composition that emphasizes that emotion, and how to break the rules of colors and proportions (uh-oh, there goes Mr. New using math words again!).  In the process, students will boost their vocabulary with words like: portrait, proportion, construction, geometric shapes, organic shapes, composition, transitional colors, expression, and so much more!

If any of this sounds too complicated, trust that Mr. New will be with you every step of the way. And trust that drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. By the time you complete this class, you’ll be proficient in drawing black-and-white portraits, and you’ll be fully prepared for our final course of this summer:
